The Somogyi Effect

The level of study for the future health scholarship is critical as the educational landscape continues to change. The student must be encouraged to learn from a multicultural and multidisciplined aspect.


The somogyi effect is characterized by a normal or elevated blood sugar at bedtime, followed by hypoglycemia during the early morning hours leading to a rebound hyperglycemia by morning. For instance:


A. A patient will have a blood sugar at bedtime of 190, a blood sugar 2 am of 65 and then a blood sugar at 8am of 250. This pattern is suggestive of the somogyi effect.
